The governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area has been cancelled by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Daily Trust is reporting.
Elections in the local government did not hold on Saturday due to violence, which forced the INEC to postpone it to yesterday, Sunday.
Southern Ijaw is one of the eight local government areas of Bayelsa and is the largest.
It was learnt that election in the area was characterized by violence, ballot box snatching and abduction of electoral officials.
Consequently, the elections are now inconclusive and a new date will be communicated by the electoral commission before a winner will be announced, the newspaper reported.
Prior to the cancellation of election in Southern Ijaw, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate and incumbent Governor, Seriake Dickson, was leading the polls in the seven LGAs where results have so far been declared by INEC.
His main challenger, Timipre Sylva of All Progressives Congress (APC) was trailing behind at second place.
This is the second governorship election conducted by INEC under the leadership of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu in a space of two weeks that has been declared inconclusive; the first was in Kogi.
